Question:

I have very low self esteem which makes it hard to meet guys. How do I gain enough confidence in myself to overcome this issue.

Sherri's Answer:

I have worked with all types of people, and I can assure you that even models and C.E.O's have some type of insecurity, oftentimes low self esteem. Indeed, you should take heart in knowing that nearly everyone has something that they are insecure about; it is part of the human condition. Things change throughout a lifetime, and those feelings of inadequacy can change too.

Dealing with self-doubt is an ongoing process which evolves with who you are and where you are in life at any given point. To process these feelings, first determine what you are insecure about. Do you have reason to be insecure or are you being too critical with yourself? This will help you distinguish between areas requiring self-improvement and those where you are being too hard on yourself. From there you can make a plan on how to tackle real trouble spots while learning how to be candid, fair and gentle with yourself in the face of sometimes superficial or unreal expectations.

Several practices can contribute to and generate positive self esteem because they yield a sense of accomplishment, purpose and grounding that ultimately empowers individuals. These include regular exercise, creative expression and time spent with nature. Also be sure, no matter what age, to make room for play time - it will add levity to your life and keep a smile on your face!
