It is almost camping time and that means that everyone will soon be running off into the woods to enjoy the sunshine, nature, and good times with friends. If you get to the campgrounds late, you may not have much choice when it comes to camp sites as the good ones will all be taken already. But what if you get there early, how do you choose which camp site is the best? Well, have no fear, because this article will tell you what features to look for in a great site so you can pick the best spot in the campground and have the best camping experience.
The first thing that you need to do to get a great camp site is to show up at a time that most of the sites are available. This means showing up early in the morning on a weekday. You should show up shortly before the check out time, which is usually between 11 and 12. This will ensure that all campers that are leaving will be almost gone and you will have the biggest number of sites to choose from. You should try to avoid popular camping holidays such as the Fourth of July, as the campgrounds will all be crowded.
So now that you have showed up at the optimal time, you can now pick from the largest number of camp sites. The first thing you should look for when choosing a camp site is the same thing that rules real estate back in civilization: location, location, location. You want to choose a site that is optimally located for your best enjoyment. Look for camp sites located near desired features such as rivers, streams, meadows, and hiking trails. This rule works for features to avoid such as the highway, trash cans, bathrooms, and information boards. These features are noisy or attract a lot of foot traffic, which can disturb you camping experience.
Now that you have the optimal location sorted out, you should look for specific features of the camp site itself. The first thing you should look for is a site that provides the most privacy, after all, you do not drive all this way out of the city to be cooped in with strangers. Look for a site that is furthest away from other sites with good medium and high foliage cover between the sites. This will shield your neighbors from your view and give you a more secluded camping experience.
The final thing that you want to look for in a camp site is one with ample space for your gear and a good flat place to set up your tent. The tent pad should be free of sharp rock or roots. Nothing is worse than having a rock dig in your back all night while you try to sleep. You also want to have adequate space for your gear and vehicle, as nothing is worse than coming to the great outdoors and feeling cramped.
